I trim mine in spring and fall. It takes a while for it to recover after trimming and start flowering. The plant seems to flower on new growth, so in fact trimming will help it flower more. If you get some daylight LED lamps on it in the winter time it will flower even more.

When should I prune powder puff plants in the San Gabriel valley California ? I pruned heavily in Spring but have rapid growth in summer. I want it to bloom, but in Sepember the plant has be come over grown and I have to trim back. If I trim now, will bloom?

Hey Nancy,

Now that the weather is getting milder I will be able to ship the seeds for you. The caliandra is flowering quite heavily right now, so it’s only a matter of time for it to grow another seedpod! I’ll keep you posted!

Hi Nancy,

I do still have the plant. It produces seed pots quite often, so getting seeds from it will be easy. However, I don’t know what the germination rate is, or how cold hardy the seeds are. It’s currently very cold here in Chicago, so it might be better to wait until spring time.
